Some Frequently Asked Questions answered

Where are you based?

I work from home in Emsworth, on the south coast of England.  I am registered with Havant Environmental Health, am fully insured, and have a Food Standards Agency rating of 5.

Do you do wedding cakes?

No, I don't.  I firmly believe that wedding cake makers have special skills (and equipment) which I don't have.  The good news is that, as far as I know, I am the only cake maker in the country who doesn't do wedding cakes so there are lots of other options out there.

Do you make round cakes?

No.  I also don't make tiered cakes, sculpted cakes, or fondant covered cakes.  The reason I offer such a limited choice in terms of shape/flavour is to keep costs reasonable for my customers.  The good news is that as far as decoration is concerned, the world is our oyster.

Do you make cupcakes?

No, I don't.  Thankfully there are some marvellous local cupcake makers and I am always happy to suggest a few businesses which might be able to help you.

How should I store my cake?

Your cake will be delivered in a sturdy corrugated cardboard box with a lid.  During cooler months I recommend keeping your cake somewhere out of direct sunshine and not too close to a radiator.  During warmer periods I recommend storing your cake in the coolest space you have (but no colder than 5 degrees centigrade) and bringing it to room temperature before eating it. When the weather is very damp try to store your cake somewhere dry to prevent the decorations absorbing moisture from the surrounding air too quickly (one option is to store your cake in a cold oven!)

It is worth remembering that butter melts at 32 degrees centigrade.  Buttercream frosting is 1 part butter, 2 parts sugar so if left out in the sunshine on a hot day it will melt!

Do you do nut free or other allergen free cakes?

I am always happy to have a frank discussion with any potential customer so that they can decide whether my set-up and procedures are ones that they feel comfortable with.  I do make cakes for customers with nut allergies.  I am not able to make gluten-free or dairy-free cakes.  I cannot at the moment offer vegan cakes.

Do you deliver?

I do deliver locally and I encourage all my customers to take advantage of this option.  Delivery within about 15 miles of Emsworth is free and I deliver from 7:00am until very late.  This means that I can keep your cake cool (especially useful in hot weather) until you need it.  My cakes aren't suitable for delivery by courier.
